Self-Care Your Way to a Better Workout

Self-care is on trend and it's showing little sign of slowing down in 2018. 

We're big fans of self-care. We believe that fitness is just one of many tools in a self-care toolbox. A healthier you is all parts mind, body and soul. Whether you want to go strong at the box, lose weight, eat right, or even give your mental health a little TLC, it all comes down to self-care. 

Mindfulness at home carries over to the gym. Studies show a consistent self-care, morning routine sets your day, week, and yes, even life, up for a win. The benefits also spill over to your workout. Here's four ways you can self-care your way to a better workout.

  1. Sleep. Making sleep a priority will not only provide the energy you need to get the most amount of benefit from your workout, it'll also boost your immune system and ability to lose weight. Good sleep requires self-control. Set a time to start winding down and stick to it. Turn off electronics, take a warm shower, and hit your bed with a good book or even better, journal. 
  2. Muscle recovery. Muscle recovery is essential to workout performance and in avoiding injury. Give yourself a little TLC and make time to get to know your foam roller. Not only will you have better workouts, it will also help your body feel great every day.
  3. Hydrate. According to recent studies 75 percent of Americans may be functioning in a chronic state of dehydration. Not cool. Have you found yourself contributing persistent headaches to stress or a lack of sleep? What about those nagging, achey joints during a tough WOD? It might be time to log your water intake. Make self-care a priority by starting each day with a 16 ounce glass of water before loading up on caffeine. 
  4. Create a morning routine. Want to wake up on the right side of the bed and increase the odds of sticking to your workout schedule? It all starts with a morning routine. Challenge yourself to getting up 30 minutes earlier each day. You'd have time for breakfast, that 16 ounce glass of water, a little foam rolling, and a buffer for handling unexpected situations that may keep you from actually getting to the gym.

Clearly self-care and PRs go together like burpees and the box. Make it a goal to prioritize self in 2018 and see the benefits spill over to your workout, mental health, and health and wellness goals. You're worth it!
