Tough WOD? Why You Should Break Out The Foam Roller

Memes aplenty make light of the pain that comes from a tough WOD but make no mistake: the struggle is real. A tough workout can make tasks as simple as going down stairs and shifting a clutch pedal (yes, they do still exist) a painful experience.

Wouldn't it be nice to end every WOD with a deep-tissue massage? Costing less than $50 (you can get bargains for $20), a foam roller is cheaper than a spa visit, soothes tired muscles, and you don't even have to make an appointment.

The Benefits of Foam Rolling

I've been working with a trainer for the past few weeks, and one thing is clear: not only am I working new sets of muscles (meaning new ways of being sore) but I've also realized why I should be foam rolling. At the end of every session Marcy rolls me out. Pretty sweet, huh? It might be the single best feeling in the world. But foam rolling is more than just a feel good fad. Here are three tried and true benefits of foam rolling.

  1. Injury Prevention. One of the most important reasons for a regular foam-rolling routine is to prevent injury. Foam rolling allows you to massage away fascia buildup in your muscles (AKA prevents those areas from becoming injury trigger points).
  2. Mobility. It's a popular misconception that foam rolling is a recovery-only technique. No way Jose'.
Foam rolling before a workout increases mobility, helping you get more out of each movement. Think of it like this: failing to roll before working out is like squatting in leather pants. It just doesn't cut it.
  3. Muscle Recovery. With mobility comes muscle recovery. In fact, studies show foam rollers speed the recovery process by reducing pain and soreness. That's what I'm talking about.

I am a foam roller convert now. I keep my roller right next to the couch and in the evening, when I'm getting my Netflix binge on, I roll it out. It takes little to no effort and I know I'm doing something good for my body. Win, win.
