Guilty pleasures - we all have them. Maybe it's a scoop (or pint!) of Ben & Jerry's or a slice of pizza. Whatever the case, if you're going to meet and maintain your weight goals it's important to know what those guilty pleasures are costing you.
Let's get one thing straight, I'm not endorsing calorie counting. I think of a healthy diet as a lifestyle rather than a strict regimen or trendy fad. By avoiding refined carbs, sugars, and processed foods and working out (hard) three to four times a week I've been able to build (and maintain) a body I'm proud of.
But knowledge is power, and knowing just how much effort is required to burn off that scoop of ice cream or mouthwatering fry may be all the motivation you need to pass on that oh-so-good guilty pleasure.
It Takes How Many Burpees?!
The folks behind the Spartan Race obstacle-course series crunched some numbers to figure out just how many burpees it would take to burn off guilty pleasure foods like French fries, cheeseburgers and a scoop of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. Spoiler: the numbers are terrifying.
Here's how a few of America's favorite treats shape up:
- Good ol' fashioned cheeseburger - 765 burpees
- French fries - 524 burpees
- Scoop of Ben & Jerry's - 283 burpees
- Average craft beer - 206 burpees
Say it ain't so! I don't know about you, but a minute of burpees is tiring. Just how long would 765 burpees take? The most burpees in one minute (male) is 47 and was achieved by Mario Silvestri on 19 March 2016. Even if you could pound out burpees at that rate (you can't, BTW) you're looking at over 16 minutes of activity. How's that cheeseburger sound now?
Mountain Climbers and Squats, Oh My!
The fun doesn't stop with burpees. Want a package of M&Ms? That will be 20 minutes of mountain climbers. A Snickers will cost you 15 minutes of squats. Yeah, that's just plain ugly.
What's the lesson? Think before you eat. Does that mean a life of deprivation? Of course not. But when you begin to understand just what those treats are costing your metabolic system and waistline they lose the attraction.
